Have you tried making blackberry "leather"? Delicious chewy snack. I imagine other fruits would work well too. Lots of online instructions. Thanks for the lovely writing.
I have not made blackberry (or other fruit) leather, but have heard before that it's worth doing. The excerpt from Polar and MacKinnon about the jam being laid out in frames and allowed to dry into "cakes" made me think of fruit leather, actually--spread it a bit thinner, and you've got the fruit equivalent of jerky!
In some instances sun drying fruits actually can boost and concentrate nutrient values. Vitamin C for example peaks with sun drying as nutrients concentrate then as water loss increases, it starts to decline. Timing as with many things is vital. Pacific Blackberry is great for this method along with salmon berries.
When I was a child and teenager in Italy I lived close to the Alps and was able to pick wild strawberry, blueberry and blackberry. They never made it to home and my face was testimony
to their final destination. Even now I have a daily dose of berries with Greek yogurt in the morning.

Heh, love the comic. Just peachy.
Also I am very interested in the book you recommended. I moved to PNW recently and have been so interested in the plant life. Can't wait to read
Thanks Heather!
Love your pieces!!
