"Time is a gentleman" and "Truth is the daughter of time." In my soldier days, we just said "Embrace the suck" when we had to endure unpleasantness for a long time.
Imagine Solzhenitzyn if he just endured the time instead of embracing the suck. Maybe time embraced, even in solitary or suffering, brings a beautiful ending, as I'm sure the prisoner's scratching would testify and I've seen as fact in the lives of chronic sufferers that I have known.
I have my reading of Gulag on pause because I can only take so much… but, yes, Solzhenitsyn made his sufferings a humane gift by committing to embracing and documenting them in real time
The cat and elephant story reminded me of almost every time I introduced a puppy to a mature dog: at some point the mature dog decided it is better to let the puppy have its way instead of encouraging it to be even more annoying
How depressing. The depravity of man. Evolution is not that cruel. History has its ascendency & its descendancy? Is mankind destined to only know short episodes of what makes civilization good, right & just? Mark Twain had no answers. Is recognition enough to change course? Evil does not show its face until the noose is ready to be tightened. Will there be enough just men out there to change the tide. This is what all Americans wonder.

Yes, too intense sometimes. Especially in these dark days.
It's been years and years since I read that.
Time is fluid. It has eddies and currents. Sometimes it speeds up and sometimes it doesn't seem to move at all.

Dear, I'm just going to disagree with this: "Evolution is not that cruel."
