Great Speech, I will be linking it in one of my own future substacks.
The comment about social media and the dangers of inadvertently finding yourself in a silo of like minded less informed individuals is particularly true.
I was canceled by 2 - 20+ year friends becuse I tried to argue facts not sanctioned by the main stream media. It requires a deliberate effort to seek out sources that you disagree with, to not only understand their viewpoits, but to better understand your own. One easy rule to apply: if someone starts off with an ad hominen attack, don't bother wasting your time, otherwise read on.
Indeed, there are no dangerous questions. Only dangerous answers. The truth is dangerous to authoritarians in direct proportion to the lies that keep them in power.
I found much of this informative and practical. Thank you.
While researching background for a novel in progress, I ran across the bonobo. Ultimately I scrapped the novel, but my minimal information created a burr under my mental saddle. I remain fascinated. How can two species (chimpanzees/bonobos) be so similar in DNA yet so different in behavior? Can you please address the topic in a future article?
I wish I could remember whom to attribute this quote to but it rings true and defines one of the main problems we are currently suffering with:
'critical thinking is not possible if you are not willing to listen to people you may disagree with'.
I recently had a 45+ yr friendship implode beyond repair because my former best friend basically insisted that if its not something she doesn't already 'know', then it, by definition, must be bullshit. in other words, if its outside her 'silo', its just plain wrong, therefore any insistence by me, that there are other valid perspectives, was met with a judgmental lecture. according to her, Bret & Heather, Joe Rogan, Jimmy Dore, Tucker Carlson and the like, are all 'propagandists with agendas' and I 'fell for it'. shame on me and them... *sigh*

'seek out sources that you disagree with...' ABSOLUTELY. 100%
the aforementioned former friend of mine (in my comment) accused me of 'wasting too much time reading'... gee it used to be called LEARNING. pffft.

"Consider the distinction between being part of a group, and being a follower."
Absolutely. And if the group demands fealty, abandon the group. It needs you more than you need it.
"Disappearing ugly facts, or silencing those who speak about them, gives them power that they do not deserve."
A thousand times this.
